Last night at the World Series Sprintcar round at Bunbury City Speedway I was randomly drug tested. Regretfully I have to advise that the result of that test was a positive reading and I was excluded from the event immediately and my racing license has been withdrawn.
For a long time now I have dealt with a health issue of depression and drug use. To admit either problem publicly is not easy. I have tried to deal with it myself privately with limited success. It's fair to say I have been in denial for a very long time.
Over the last month for the first time in my life I have sought outside help and had committed to professional counseling. As part of that I seriously contemplated giving up racing prior to the end of the season but rightfully or wrongly I love racing and I had commitments to the team, loyal sponsors and fans to see the season out.
Unfortunately the events of last night brought the matter to a head. I owe a huge apology to the sport, to my team and sponsors and to the racing public.
I want to make it absolutely clear that I have never taken performance enhancing or recreational drugs whilst racing. I respect the sport, my fellow drivers and all that it has given to me.
With the support of my family and friends, particularly speedway friends I now need to devote my energies into restoring my health, which I will tackle with the same determination and focus as I have done in my racing. You have not seen the last of Ryan Farrell at the speedway.
This is a very difficult time for myself and my family and we would appreciate if you could respect our privacy.
Ryan Farrell.
