Speedway Australia Maintains Tough Stance Against Drugs In Sport

In light of recent events in the sport of speedway and many other sports across Australia, Speedway Australia has reiterated its tough stance on maintaining the integrity of our sport and consider this a high priority for all drivers, crews, officials and of course race fans.

There is no question that the public awareness of drugs in sport is higher than ever given the current investigations into the use of prohibited substances in other sports such as the AFL, NRL and cycling. In accordance with drug and alcohol policies, Speedway Australia continues to test speedway participants across the country at a range of different venues and racing divisions.

On the 15th of February 2013, Speedway Australia conducted drug testing on several speedway participants in Bunbury, Western Australia. A speedway driver participating in World Series Sprintcars has allegedly returned a positive test and was immediately disqualified from the race meeting.

“This incident serves as a timely reminder that speedway is a DANGEROUS sport and we as the peak body for speedway are determined to maintain the sport’s integrity and safety for everyone involved,” stated Competition & Operations Manager Paul Trengove.

“We have a zero tolerance for the use of prohibited substances within the sport and the penalties that can be applied under the Speedway Australia Racing Rules and Regulations reflect this.”

Our sport, like all other sports within Australia, is under a great deal of scrutiny from State and Federal Governments as well as anti-doping drug authorities. It is imperative that all participants are aware of the importance of this and understand that Speedway Australia will continue to ensure drugs are not a part of our sport.
