Dobson Gets His Mumbo Back
Author : SprintcarZone PR
Racing has its up and downs – we all know that - and Shaun Dobson’s season thus far has certainly been black and white, with very little greys in between.
The summer opened with Dobson destroying the family car after heavy contact with the cement wall at the newly reconfigured, and highly banked, Toowoomba Speedbowl.
From here he wowed the crowd at Moama’s Heartland Raceway in the Harry Droste owned #V36. Dobson drove through the C and B mains to transfer in the night’s feature event. In that race he proceeded to slice his way through the field to find himself second when a stoppage cut short the main race with a number of laps remaining.
“We had a lot of fun at Moama and passed a lot of cars!” explained Dobson.
Unfortunately though, the team hurt the family owned KRE engine after this and the following two meetings have been somewhat write-offs as the team toiled to get the mumbo back under the hood to be competitive.
“The whole crew have been working their butts of to get it all sorted and I know it’s a disappointing for them, just as it is for me when the car just isn’t running right.”
“When it is, I know we are fast.”
On the weekend they certainly proved that.
Last week a container arrived at Droste Motorsport in the shape of a fresh KRE race engine and the crew had it bolted into the downtubes of the COOL chassis ready for Shaun’s arrival from Tasmania on Friday.
No one can say Dobson was handed any free ticket at Avalon Saturday night.
Dobson was drawn to start his two heats from mid-pack, a clear disadvantage to qualifying well.
Not to be denied however, he moved forward from sixth starting position to fourth, hot on the heels of Darren Mollenoyux and Brett Milburn.
He then drove from fifth to second in his next heat earning enough points to get a start in the top six shootout, or top six time-trial for those from the old school.
Shaun set down the time to beat and held the top-qualifying lap before being pipped by a mere 0.03s by Steven Lines.
This placed Dobson on the front row for the main race, on the outside of Lines – the driver in white-hot form at the moment.
Shaun was aggressive on the start and would lead away as the nights feature race got underway. By a third race distance, Lines experience and race craft saw him find a way past relegating Dobson to second, a place he would hold all the way to the checkered flags.
“I am rapt to be finishing up here on the podium once again amongst this company.”
“Whilst the last two shows have been disappointing, this result makes it all worth while.”
“I can’t thank Harry enough for this opportunity, and to Freddy and James for the work they do not only getting the car ready, but also here on race nights.”
Crew chief Freddy Walsh was equally as complimentary on his young driver.
“Shaun was fast!” he explained.
And that statement was certainly backed up by the transponders where Dobson was shown to have recorded the fastest lap time of the entire feature race.
His best lap was a 12.085 on lap number two.
In fact, outside of Lines whose best time was a low 12.3 circulation, no other car in the main race turned a lap under a 12.5
“I am really looking forward to the next few races now.”
“Lets hope the roller-coaster ride can be done with a we can string together a number of strong results in the races coming up.”
The team hope to gather some momentum this weekend at Premier Speedway, Warrnambool for the SRA Twin Features night before taking on the travelling World Series troupe when they swing by Geelong and Warrnambool around the New Year period.
