Allstar Christmas at Nyora.
Author : .
While it’s only four days until Christmas it’s only 6 days until the All Star Sprintcars blast into town for the annual big bash at Nyora Raceway on Friday night December 27th.
And while three of the four rounds contested have been won by South Australian drivers, this month will see some Victorian and maybe even some local redemption with series leader and Scoresby resident Matthew Reed driving Ken Hutchins’ #49 in hot form having won the last round at nearby Rosedale raceway and then following that up with a tough grind to a podium finish last weekend at Hamilton for the Gold Cup behind a couple of front starting Americans.
A slender few points behind in the championship but an absolute local legend is Tony Moule in the Dave Argus owned #26. The former 360 National Champion has had a couple of runner up finishes so far this championship and loves nothing more than cutting loose on an elbows up racetrack, which is exactly what Nyora raceway is. Moule also won this event just 12 months ago adding more weight to his favouritism.
Defending series champion Brad Foster is also a local from just down the road and is also more of an elbows up racer than a stylist so will be well suited to the venue.
Moama and Swan Hill round winner Chad “croweater” Ely will be outnumbered by locals at this meeting with only Jed Bell and Shannon Barry for support. Barry has run a top five finish here before while Bell has never set eyes on the tight track before.
The traveller award will be shared between Queenslander Brent Kratzmann who should find the stop start nature of the track a bit like his home track of Archerfield and NT’s Mark King.
Throw in former Champion Paul Solomon, former Victorian Champion Chris Solomon, multiple state Sportsman (now Wingless Sprints) Champion Phil Lock, Australian AMCA Nationals Champion Mark Weaver, in form drivers and quasi team mates Brenton Farrer and Mick Cunningham, and the rest of the field and you have a very solid and even field that could easily spring some surprises.
The V8 Dirt Modifieds will continue the beautiful bellow of V8 engined open wheeled beasts as they contest their annual “Grand in the Hand”. Local support will be spread across veteran Lloyd Hobson, his daughter Ebony and club favourite Daryl Hickson. It will also be great to see class stalwart Murray Atkin back behind the wheel while last year’s winner Mick Kiraly will be looking for a repeat ahead of Trevor Perry, Scott Whiting, Darren Clarke, Brett Clarke, Craig Williams, Darren and Paul Tindal and also Andrew Katz.
Supporting the winged action will be VSC Open sedans where we eagerly await the return of track maestro Simon Bent in his Falcon who will take on last start podium getters Mark Miles and Dale Meade amongst others. In a David and Goliath battle Marcus Reddecliffe will be trying to upset the apple cart again with a heat win or better in his totally legal 1200cc Junior Sedan. Redlines’ Corey Gantley had such fun in his Cortina last time that he’s back for another blast as is Darren O’Brien and Ash England.
Sibling rivalry will continue with the brother and sister combo of Seth and Shona Bent doing battle in the 120cc Junior Sedans. Shona was the only driver to beat Seth at the last meeting although Seth did win the main event. Josh Stewart, Zoe Young and Jack Van Bremen will all be trying hard to banish the Bents’ from victory lane.
In the Vintage Sprintcar and Super Modified demonstrations the main trophy was awarded to Jeff Long in his 6 cylinder Super Modified while Paul Woodgate’s superb USAC Champ Car won the best presented car award but was sadly sidelined after riding over the back of Mark Banks’ ex Bob Anderson Hot Rod when it detonated an engine.
So all in all it was a fantastic season opener for the club who now look forward to their annual Allstar Sprintcar, V8 Dirt Modified “Grand in the Hand” double feature on December 27.
