This Saturday night (September 28) the 2024/25 South Australian Speedway season will officially begin with the Wingless Sprints being the main attraction of the opening night of the Murray Machining and Sheds Murray Bridge Speedway season. The opening night will the first of five scheduled events at the Murray Bridge venue with a field of 25 drivers expected to race it out for first chequered flag of the new season.
The opening event has attracted most of the local stars with dual South Australian Champion Tyson Martin, multiple feature winner Jack McCarthy, Rylan Furler, Bronson Mauro, Anthony Tapley, Michael “Spike” Spoljaric, Harley and Jesse Alexander and Sam Martin all on the nomination list.
Last season Sam Martin caused a big upset by charging through the field and claiming the opening A-main victory of the season and the racer from Tailem Bend is quite capable of repeating his outstanding win again this season. During the off-season Martin has kept sharp competing on two wheels taking in several events at the Northline Speedway racing 500cc Solos, riding a Long-Track bike in NSW and even competed at the Sand Drags at Wallaroo.
Of the drivers listed above Tyson Martin was the most impressive at practice last weekend although Rylan Furler, William Caruso and Harley Alexander all turned some impressive laps at the new look 360 metre Murray Bridge venue.
Mount Barker resident Andy Thomas will take to track in an ex Todd Wigzell race winning GF1 chassis, while last season’s Murray Bridge Speedway Rookie of the Year Kaitlin Vickers, Bordertown’s James Rodda, Caleb and Lockie Evans, Kadina’s Tate Cowie, Michael Busby, Darryl Sloan and Hamilton’s Aaron Kennett will also be out to make an impressive start to the new season.
With a majority of the field being seasoned campaigners the racing should be fast up front but the nomination list does include a couple of new names such as rookie Hayden Crafter, who took to the track for the first time at last weekend’s practice session while Patrick Monaghan returns to Wingless Sprint racing after a couple of seasons on the sidelines.
With a field of 25 cars nominated the field will be split into three groups therefore the format will include six heats, a B-Main prior to opening Wingless Sprint A-Main of the season. Gates into the Murray Machining and Sheds Murray Bridge Speedway open at 4pm with cars on track at 5pm.
